Tonight, I'll be watching the OpenAI DevDay livestream. For the first time in a long while, I'm approaching a tech event with the same anticipation I used to feel waiting for those early Steve Jobs keynotes back in the day.
I can't quite explain why. I just want it to be genuinely exciting.
What Is Already Visible in Codex
An OpenAI Developers tab has already appeared right inside Codex, complete with the full agenda, and you'll be able to watch the stream from there directly. Most of the conversation is expected to center on Codex and agents capable of handling increasingly autonomous work.
Sessions Worth Watching
One of the more intriguing sessions covers an internal OpenAI agent that kept builds and tests running smoothly across a massive shared codebase for over a thousand hours. It operated with defined goals, spawned subagents, and maintained persistent plans to diagnose failures and coordinate fixes.
The agenda also touches on building plugins, agents, and apps directly inside Codex, a new Codex Game Studio, and a talk from Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw, on how agents function within open-source project teams.
A separate session is dedicated to the shift from simple agent loops toward multiple agents working together and interacting.
Where OpenAI Is Heading
Based on this preview, a clear direction is taking shape: Codex is gaining more capacity for sustained, long-running work and for actively participating in a team's day-to-day operations.
It's clear OpenAI has decided to shift its focus away from the raw horsepower race between models and toward building an entire environment for users -- one packed with tools where you can do almost anything you set your mind to: build apps, create games, launch agents, and chain them together into workflows. That's the vision they're pushing right now, and I'm genuinely curious how far they've actually gotten with it.
More than anything, I want that spark back -- the one where you see something new during a keynote and immediately want to go try it yourself.
