I was setting up a new Claude-based automation this week when I noticed Anthropic quietly updated their privacy policy. Starting July 8, 2026, some capabilities will require you to submit a government ID and a live selfie through a third-party verification service called Persona.
The support article is live at Anthropic's help center. The short version: certain capabilities on Claude will gate behind identity verification, handled by Persona, a third-party KYC company. You hand over a state ID and a live selfie. Persona stores that data. Anthropic does not specify exactly which capabilities trigger the requirement, which is its own problem.
Persona is backed by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. That detail alone was enough to set off a thread with 734 comments. More relevant to me: Discord dropped Persona as their age verification vendor in early 2026 following user backlash and a reported data exposure incident. Discord has hundreds of millions of users and still decided the vendor relationship was not worth keeping. Anthropic apparently looked at that history and decided to sign on anyway.
I want to be clear about what Anthropic said and did not say. They did not publish a list of which specific features will require verification. They did not explain what happens to your data after verification completes. They linked to Persona's own privacy policy for that, which is the kind of answer that tells you they would prefer you not ask follow-up questions.
If you are using Claude through the API, this probably does not affect you right now. The verification requirement appears aimed at consumer-facing product capabilities, not the API tier. But I am not going to pretend that boundary is permanent.
The people most immediately affected are Pro and Max subscribers who use Claude as a daily tool. I connected with a few developers in the thread who run Claude as part of internal tooling and expense it through personal subscriptions. For them, submitting a government ID to a Thiel-backed data broker is not a friction they signed up for when they started paying $20 or $200 a month.
The timing is also worth noting. This announcement landed the same week that Anthropic is dealing with a class-action lawsuit over usage limits, White House export control pressure, and rumors about upcoming model releases. There is a lot happening at once, and burying a significant privacy policy change inside that news cycle is a choice.
The other thing I keep thinking about: the support article says verification is required for "certain capabilities" without defining them. That vagueness is not an accident. It means the scope can expand later without a new announcement. You verify once, and the definition of what requires verification can drift.
If you are building anything on top of Claude's consumer product right now, go read the actual support article before July 8. Know what you are agreeing to. If you are API-only, watch this space, because the line between consumer product decisions and API policy has moved before.
Tell us about the workflow you want to improve. We will help you identify the practical next step.
