I was setting up Claude Enterprise for a client last month and nearly missed a small warning note under the incognito toggle. It said chat history is still visible to your admin. I dug into it, and what I found is worth spelling out clearly.
Claude Enterprise ships with something called the Compliance API. It is not a paid add-on. It is not buried in a security tier. It is free, built in, and an admin can switch it on in about five minutes without notifying anyone on the team.
Once it is active, the admin can programmatically pull the full text of every conversation -- your messages and Claude's responses -- along with every file you uploaded and timestamped activity logs. That includes conversations you started in incognito mode. The incognito label means your history is not saved to your own sidebar. It does not mean the conversation bypasses the compliance layer. The warning text is accurate. It is just easy to miss.
I tested this on a sandbox org. The API returns clean JSON. The conversations are fully readable, not hashed or summarized. If your company has a legal or compliance team that decides to run a pull, they get everything.
Most people using Claude at work are doing fairly innocuous things. But developers tend to paste things into AI tools that other employees do not: internal API schemas, database structures, snippets from proprietary codebases, credentials they meant to redact, architecture diagrams described in plain text.
I have watched colleagues paste entire config files into a chat to ask a quick question about one line. That file now exists in the compliance log. If the Compliance API is enabled, anyone with admin access can read it, and depending on your company's policies, that data can be subpoenaed.
This is not a vulnerability in the traditional sense. Anthropic documents it. But documentation and awareness are different things. The people I have talked to who use Claude Enterprise daily had no idea this existed until I brought it up.
First, ask your IT or security team directly whether the Compliance API is enabled. Do not assume it is not. The default depends on how the org was configured, and admins who set it up for compliance reasons have no obligation to announce it.
Second, treat your company Claude instance the way you would treat email. If you would not write it in a work email, do not put it in a Claude chat. That is a blunt rule but it holds. Credentials, unreleased product details, client data -- none of that belongs in a chat that routes through your employer's enterprise account regardless of whether the compliance logging is on.
Third, if you have a legitimate need for private experimentation or research, use a personal Claude Pro account on your own hardware. Keep the two accounts completely separate. This is not paranoia. It is just basic operational hygiene that most of us are sloppy about because the chat interface feels informal.
The underlying issue here is that tools which feel conversational and personal are running on infrastructure your employer controls. That gap between feeling and reality is where problems happen.
